My Ideal Sustainable Garden

This term the boys and girls of Rm4 will be competing in a garden competition.

The rules are simple
  1. Produce an edible garden that is sustainable for the whole year.

This means that each group must…
-Plant seasonally .
-Maintain healthy soil.
-Produce healthy organic plants.
-Maintain and gather food throughout the year.


What is the meaning of organic garden?

Many gardeners wonder what exactly organic gardening means. The simple answer is that organic gardeners don't use synthetic fertilizers or pesticides on their plants.





What does this mean for our gardening?
Defenition :
No modern man made synthetic fertilisers
So what can we use?
-cow/sheep/Horse/Chicken poo/ vegetable and
food scraps/sea feed shells/kina shells/Hoa of the
paua/sea weed/ fish frames/Fish heads in water/
Comfree tea (leaves in water)

No insecticides/poisons
How do we attract the bees?
How do we get rid of insect pests?

New Zealand plants (vegetables)
March - April - May - June
       Growing time

Our vegetables need to be ready for puanga (matariki)
Sturdy vegetable plants - Rain, drop in the temperature,
                            Lack of sun, frost
